The creation of Superman's first sweetheart was beautifully romantic, but those who followed the superhero's lore have long known a tender secret.
Most are aware that Lois Lane has existed as Superman's female interest since the conception of the two characters in Action Comics #1 in June 1938. If having the same steady girlfriend for eighty years seems a bit farfetched, you'd be right. There had to be others, or let's say there had to be that one special someone else.

Long before the adult relationship Clark Kent and Lois Lane shared, there was a childhood sweetheart who melted the steady composure of the Man of Steel. This person was Lana Lang, who Clark knew since they were children. Together, they were two of the kindest and most giving of individuals who always put others' needs first. Under different circumstances, this would have been a match made in heaven, and they might even have grown old together. But regardless of their shared experiences and overpowering attraction, Lana and Clark's union was doomed to fail from the start.

Historically, the character of Lana Lang first appeared in the Superboy #10 comic book in September/October 1950. The storyline moved from the comic books to the movies and finally to the highly-rated television series, Smallville. This ten-year adventure best depicted how Lana and Clark's innocent friendship blossomed into a heart-warming love that could span time and space.
CLANA
As the series popularity grew, fans could see the world through Lana and Clark's eyes, as they drew closer together. Many viewers made love-themed music videos that reflected the journey that "Clana" was taking.
Unfortunately, the sad truth is that no matter how deeply involved Clark and Lana were, there was a written destiny for Clark and Lois's pairing. Clark and Lana had no idea that their love was star-crossed, but all who followed their bittersweet relationship did. During the first few years of the series, Lana and Clark fell more deeply in love than two people ever could, but there was no path for them to be together in the end.
Even as viewers prayed for a way that it was not so, it was clear that Lana and Clark's story could never have a happily-ever-after ending. As intensely as their fires burned, Clark's need to keep his "secret" meant that he desperately strove to hide an essential part of his life from her. Across the years of their budding relationship, Lana's rightful intuition that Clark was not honest with her drove them apart more often than it's fair to mention. Sad or not, the intense emotions and heart-wrenching miseries that he experienced with Lana were necessary. Only with these life lessons could Clark learn the importance of sharing totally with another and eventually becoming the strong and loving man of steel.
